PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
Tamalpa Institute offers a comprehensive professional training program for individuals who wish to incorporate the principles and tools of embodied creativity into their own personal development and professional practices. Graduates of the program apply the Tamalpa Life/Art Process®, also referred to as the Halprin Life/Art Process®, or simply the Life/Art Process, into such fields as expressive arts therapy, somatics, education, health care, organizational development, community service, and performance.
Tamalpa’s professional training program begins with Level 1: Personal Embodiment. In Level 1, you will learn how to use artistic and therapeutic principles to uncover and explore autobiographical material through a “body mythology” that connects you to the compelling events, issues, and questions in your life. Working with intermodal art mediums – movement/dance, drawing, vocalizing, writing, and dialogues – you reflect on your history, who you are now, and the changes that you would like to embody in order to live more artfully in all aspects of your life. The training includes experiential exploration through the arts, philosophy, and theory of the practice, and basic maps and methods of the work.
Level 2: Embodied Leadership is the next step in our training program. Level 2 focuses on advanced personal practice and the development of professional applications of the Tamalpa Life/Art Process. In Level 2 you will develop the necessary skills to coach individuals, facilitate groups, and apply the principles of embodied awareness into fields such as expressive arts therapy, somatics, education, consulting, health care, the arts, and social change.
Level 1 & Level 2 are both offered as distance education programs delivered via live, interactive webinar sessions and include access to educational materials through our online Moodle platform: https://www.taasonline.org/. Each training consists of 12 monthly 3-day (Friday-Sunday) or 4-day (Thursday-Sunday) intensive weekends. On most months between monthly intensives, a Saturday morning class is held to provide students with continuity and connection to the Tamalpa work throughout the training. In Level 1, each student also receives two one-on-one mentoring/coaching sessions with core faculty during the course of the training.
The final step in our training is Level 3: Fieldwork Supervision. This is an online course where you will learn how to adapt, apply, and take the Tamalpa Life/Art Process into a community or setting where you feel called to offer this work. In the Level 3 training, you will work one-on-one with a fieldwork supervisor who will help guide you through implementing and documenting your fieldwork project.
Successful completion of Level 3 leads to certification as a Tamalpa Practitioner and as a Registered Somatic Movement Therapist/Educator with the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA). Tamalpa Institute is recognized as an Official Training Organization by the United States Association for Body Psychotherapy (USABP) and our educational program is also approved by the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA). If you are interested in pursuing an advanced degree in conjunction with your certification in the Tamalpa Life/Art Process, our collaboration with the European Graduate School provides a pathway for you to apply your Tamalpa training toward an MA or PhD.
