Online Series: Documenting your Life/Art Process ~ with Iu-Hui Chua

4 Tuesdays, August 3 – 24,  10:30AM-12:30PM PDT

Take your theme to the next level – into performative ritual and video document as an artistic keepsake.

In this workshop, we will look at the relationship between movement and video to expand our experience of combining artistic mediums for self-expression. We will take materials that you have generated from work done in other Tamalpa classes as a foundation for our multi-media explorations. These could include any of the following:

  • A body part drawing from Natan’s Body Mapping Series
  • A Self-Portrait drawing or performance from Daria or Natan’s Self-portrait workshops or the Level 1 Training
  • A movement piece developed in Joy’s performance workshops
  • A Singing Body piece created in Dohee’s workshops

We will use movement, writing, drawing, hands-on camera work, and editing to explore the technical and creative aspects of making a movement video. The process of learning will be collaborative while the projects will be individually based.

As directors of these videos, we will look at how we shape our viewers’ experiences through the use of composition, timing, framing, editing, and storytelling. We can bring our audiences into close intimate spaces of our lives, and invite them into beloved environments surrounding us. The stage can be flexible and changing, the view microscopic or vast.

*Note: The bulk of our explorations will be experimenting with the intersections between the technology, movement, drawings, and writing. The more material (themes, intentions, drawings, writings, scores for dances) you have prepared ahead of time, the more material you will have to work with. This class has homework and will require time outside of class to capture video and experiment with the editing programs.

Materials needed:

A digital video camera (camera phone /DSLR /camcorder /computer camera, etc. Doesn’t have to be fancy). A computer. We will be using free video editing software to be downloaded after the course begins. Please prepare a comfortable space to move in with access to your online device and a reliable internet connection. Also, have art supplies ready at hand for drawing activities, and paper and pen for journaling and creative writing exercises.

Pre-requisite:
Participants must have taken a Tamalpa class series or workshop or have done the self-portrait process in a Tamalpa training program and be familiar with the Tamalpa Life/Art Process.
