The tool of every self-portrait is the mirror. You see yourself in it. Turn it the other way and you see the world.
— Agnès Varda, filmmaker and photographer

Self-portraits begin with questions.

A longing begins to burn at the edges of the heart. A dream wakes us from deep sleep. Resistance rises on the horizon and, like fog rolling over the ocean, threatens to cover everything in gray and damp.

Make marks! Mark the arrival of curiosity, risk, and the unknown. Stay with them. Look. Imagine. Listen. Touch those edges. Wait for the image to arrive. And when it does, treat it as an oracle, a messenger, a dance partner, a song.

Follow the questions with movement. A feeling arises—follow it with movement. Something is remembered—follow it with movement. An image begins to form—follow it into a drawing. Move again. Listen as the image begins to speak. Gather its words and plant them like seeds in a garden, or in the pot on your windowsill. Then return once more to movement.

This workshop includes a brief introduction to the history and principles of the Halprin Life/Art Process® and the Self-Portrait Process. Participants will be guided through the creation of a self-portrait through movement, drawing, and reflective writing, followed by creative explorations that deepen and expand the dialogue with the image. Thoughtfully structured witnessing and sharing practices will support individual insight while cultivating a respectful and inspiring creative community.

This workshop welcomes those who find themselves at a threshold—artists, seekers, creative makers, and anyone called by a question. No previous experience is needed. Bring your curiosity, your body, and your willingness to listen for what wants to emerge.

Bring your curiosity, your body, and your willingness to be surprised by what the mirror reveals—within yourself and in the world around you.
