Planetary Dance at deYoung Museum

Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden of             deYoung Museum in San Francisco

Considered by Halprin as her greatest work, Planetary Dance arose out of community workshops run by Halprin and her husband, the architect Lawrence Halprin, on the “Search for Living Myths and Rituals” in the early 1980s. In the decades since, it has evolved into a worldwide dance for peace among peoples and peace with the Earth, performed on six continents and 46 countries to date. Accompanied by rhythmic music, participants will be led through the simple choreography and prompted to set their own intentions for the dance. As a participatory dance, it recalls group rituals and gatherings that cross time and culture, harnessing the power of collective movement to create a common rhythm and purpose, wherein people stop moving as individuals and begin to move as if they were parts of a single body in deeply interrelated ways. In these archetypal movements, they seem to trace the forms and patterns of a larger organism, communicating with and being moved by a group spirit. In contemporary society, occasions for channeling the power of group spirit are increasingly rare; past societies have used it as a way to pray, celebrate, and commune. Through the Planetary Dance, this power is directed towards peace. This performance is presented in conjunction with Anna Halprin: Body Radical

Participants should wear comfortable shoes and clothing and be prepared to move.

** Children are most welcome !
